Chicago Bears could sign Allen Robinson just to trade him
The Bears may end up signing wide receiver Allen Robinson just to flip him in a trade.
Chicago Bears fans are waiting, and hoping, to see what big move the team makes this offseason. Could it be a trade for Deshaun Watson, Derek Carr or Carson Wentz? The options are out there and the last thing fans want to see is the team doing nothing.
One non-quarterback name to keep an eye on is Allen Robinson. The receiver is now a free agent after him and the Bears could not figure out an extension in 2020. That leaves him as a possible franchise tag candidate and an NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero believes the team could even tag him so that they can offer him up in trades.
Allen Robinson could get the franchise tag just to be traded by the Bears
Robinson has been with the Bears since 2018 and just posted 1,250 yards and six touchdowns without a top-tier quarterback throwing him the ball in 2020. That means one possibility is to tag him and land that next-level talent.
However, tagging the receiver also means the Bears can offer him up in quarterback trade talks. Including Robinson in deal for a quarterback could mean a draft pick stays in Chicago once the deal is done. However, losing Robinson would be a great way to hamstring the newly-acquired quarterback.
Robinson signed with the Bears to be the new elite target for Mitchell Trubisky. While his stats were fine, he was largely the lone bringht spot on the unit.
Tagging Robinson includes taking on the risk of no one wanting him in a trade. But he is still only 27-years-old and has proven to be a 1,000-yard receiver without much help at quarterback. A team like the Eagles may love the idea of pairing him with Jalen Hurts to jumpstart that offense in 2021.
Bears general manager Ryan Pace is on the hot seat and tagging Robinson, only to not land a star quarterback, could finally do him in. He must now hope the Robinson market is thriving and that placing the tag on the receiver can actually help the Bears.
