NFL rumors: Carson Wentz himself holding up potential Bears trade
By John Buhler
If you want to know why the Chicago Bears have not traded for Carson Wentz yet, ask the man himself.
Carson Wentz himself might be the biggest reason he has not been traded by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Chicago Bears yet.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated appeared on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Monday discussing this very subject.
“I think Chicago is the frontrunner this morning, and I do know there’s a feeling inside that building from Ryan Pace, from the coaching staff, Matt Nagy, John DeFilippo […] they believe, mechanically, they can fix him,” said Breer to Cowherd on Monday’s show.
“I think the issue right now, Colin, is where Carson Wentz wants to go. I think it’s become pretty clear he’d rather go to Indianapolis, and I think part of it now, for the Eagles, is, ‘Alright, if our best return now is Chicago over Indy, then we need to convince Carson Wentz, this is the only place you’re going, bud, and you need to buck up and accept this, and realize the Bears are going to give you a good chance.'”
“I think it’s pretty clear at this point that the Bears have pushed harder than the Colts to get Carson Wentz. […] I think the Bears would like to at least know that Carson Wentz is on board before pulling a trigger on a trade.”
Should Carson Wentz welcome a trade to the Bears over the Colts?
These feel like the two teams Wentz could be traded to by the Eagles: The Bears and the Indianapolis Colts. While going to the Colts would mean Wentz would reunite with his former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, the Bears do employ John DeFilippo, who was his quarterbacks coach during Philadelphia’s 2017 run to Super Bowl 52. Neither spot is a bad one.
With the Eagles at least asking for Wentz’s blessing to trade him to the Bears, it seems like the right way to go. If their trade offer is far better than what the Colts are offering, the Eagles would be foolish not to do some hard convincing that the Bears are the way to go for him. Chicago might be bidding against itself for Wentz, but he is not be traded to the Bears if he does not want to go.
Wentz may prefer to go to the Colts, but the Eagles have to do what is in their best interest, too.
