MLB Twitter goes insane over ridiculously expensive Fernando Tatis Jr. extension.
Fernando Tatis, Jr. had one heck of a 2020 season with the San Diego Padres and the team proved on Wednesday just how much they wanted to recreate that magic going forward. The Padres reportedly inked a deal with the shortstop for a massive 14-year, $340 million contract extension.
And Twitter went absolutely bonkers when the news broke.
Many wondered how the team could afford such a hefty contract … we’re wondering that too.
How rich are the Padres? Because at this point I’m very confused why they ever had such a low payroll a few years ago. #tatis #bigmoney

even if he is worth it (which is probably more likely than not), I can’t understand why you pay him that much before he’s even had the chance to have a Sophomore slump & start making big adjustments. just so much money so early
Others were just happy with news.
Padres got a steal on the Tatis Jr deal. Only going to look better and better as the years go on. Not quite the steal the Braves got with Acuna but still.

I would like the Tatis deal please. But not the dollar amount. Just the job security.

Others were less than impressed with the news.

Fernando Tatis Jr. just turned 22 in January
Tatis just turned 22 in January and it’s safe to say this might be the best birthday present he’s ever had. The silly part is … he’s only been in the MLB for two years and still hasn’t played the equivalent of a full season.
Tatis Jr. finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 2020 and had a batting average of .277 in the shortened season, due to COVID-19. He was thrust into the spotlight after the controversial grand slam that saw most of the MLB stand behind him.
