The Champions League round of 16 kicks off on Wednesday with Sevilla hosting Borussia Dortmund at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. Dortmund finished first in their group to earn home-field advantage in the second leg. While Sevilla finished second in their group to Chelsea.
Sevilla are comfortably in fourth in La Liga. Manager Julen Lopetegui’s team is nine points behind first-place Atletico Madrid but seven points ahead of fifth-place Real Sociedad with one game in hand. Lopetegui’s side going into the Champions League on a red hot streak. Sevilla have won six straight games and are unbeaten in their last 11 games, picking up 29 of a possible 33 points. Youssef En-Nesyri has been incredible since joining the club 13 months ago. This season, En-Nesyri leads the club with 17 goals in 33 games. If Sevilla are going to knock off Dortmund, they will need En-Nesyri to continue scoring goals.
Dortmund are a very different team compared to the last time they played in the Champions League. In the days following the final game of the group stage, Dortmund fired manager Lucien Favre and replaced him with interim manager Edin Terzic. The managerial change has not materialized improved results. Dortmund have dropped to sixth in the table and are 15 points behind first-place Bayern Munich and six points behind fourth-place Wolfsburg. In their last six Bundesliga games, Dortmund have won only once, picking up just five of a possible 18 points. Dortmund have continually failed to fix their defensive problems. Ultimately, Dortmund’s defense, or lack thereof, will determine how far they go in the Champions League. Offensively, Dortmund are among the top clubs in the world. Striker Erling Haaland has been unbelievable this season, scoring 23 goals in 23 games.
