Packers draft rumors
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – SEPTEMBER 13: Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers speaks with head coach Matt LaFleur (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images) /

The Packers have constructed an elite roster around Aaron Rodgers. It’s imperative they add an immediate starter with their first rounder in 2021.

Green Bay took a lot of criticism for their approach to the 2020 NFL Draft. Spending high picks on Jordan Love and A.J. Dillon didn’t go over well with the Packers’ passionate fan base. Expect the organization to approach the 2021 draft with a little more practicality.

In other words, look for Green Bay to select a player they believe can help them immediately with the No. 31 overall pick. Finding stars at the end of Round 1 isn’t easy, but it’s what the Packers must try to do.

Finding a wide receiver capable of taking some pressure off of Davante Adams would be a welcome choice for Aaron Rodgers. The lack of supporting talent at wideout didn’t stop Green Bay from being a regular-season power in 2020, but the degree of difficulty was pretty high for their Hall of Fame signal-caller.

Expect to see the Packers linked to a number of running backs at this spot in the draft. Both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are headed for free agency. Dillon will replace one of those two, but Green Bay might need to find him a partner in the early rounds.

The key for the Packers is to find a guy who can help right away at a high-impact position. The franchise would be wise to avoid the following three prospects if they want to succeed in that endeavor.

3. Joseph Ossai, Linebacker, Texas

Ossai is drawing interest late in Round 1 largely because of his intriguing combination of athleticism and a motor that doesn’t quit. The problem with him as a prospect is that he’s a one-trick pony at the moment. Ossai enjoys some measure of success rushing the passer, but he’s lost when he is asked to do anything in coverage.

The Packers can use help at linebacker, but they should look for a more well-rounded prospect. Ossai might turn into an above-average pass rusher in time, but Green Bay isn’t the right team to select him and wait around for him to develop.
