Eagles roster purge far from over, and Alshon Jeffery is next
By Mark Powell
The Philadelphia Eagles will be virtually unrecognizable next season.
Carson Wentz was just the beginning. DeSean Jackson was only a distraction. The Eagles are far from done in their roster turnover from last year’s disaster to Nick Sirianni’s first season on the job.
Sirianni and Howie Roseman are cleaning house and for good reason, their 4-11-1 record was so abysmal that it got Doug Pederson fired. Pederson didn’t even speak to Carson Wentz for months on end. Some bad football teams fail to reach their potential, while others are dumpster fires from the start. The Philadelphia Eagles were clearly the latter, and Roseman is wasting no time pretending he needs holdovers from a team just three seasons removed from a Super Bowl.
Which veterans could be next in the Eagles roster purge?
Alshon Jeffery is on the clock. Frankly, he’s been on the clock for quite some time now. The Eagles were hinting at trading Jeffery all of last season, only to hold onto him long enough for him to lose all value.
Jeffery is signed through 2023 but the lack of guaranteed money on his deal makes his loss acceptable, especially when you take one look at the Eagles cap situation. Malik Jackson could be next, along with any number of players without guaranteed money moving forward.
This is Sirianni and Roseman punting on the short-term in hopes of creating a better team in the long run. In his prime, Jeffery was a legitimate, large target for Wentz and Nick Foles, but he doesn’t offer anything resembling that for Jalen Hurts entering the 2021 season. Injuries have hampered his production to the point the Eagles would be better off drafting a younger receiver of a similar mold, especially given the contract differential.
Buckle up, Eagles fans. You’re in for a long offseason.
