3 realistic Drew Lock trades the Broncos could make
By John Buhler
The Broncos are one of the favorites to potentially land Deshaun Watson
If quarterback Deshaun Watson is traded by the Houston Texans, the Broncos are among the favorites to land the star signal-caller from the Lone Star State. Houston remains adamant that Watson is not on the trading block, but Denver can put together one of the stronger trade packages for him. They start with Lock going to Houston, along with the No. 9 overall pick.
See, Houston does not have a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. That is because former head coach/de facto general manager Bill O’Brien traded away the rights to what became the No. 3 overall pick to the Miami Dolphins for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil. While Tunsil is an excellent player, it did not help O’Brien keep his job or make Watson want to stay in Houston long-term.
Obviously, Lock and the No. 9 overall pick are nowhere near enough to get the Texans to move off Watson. Denver will need to give up probably another first-round pick down the line and then some to make this work. Keep in mind other teams like the Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins could be in the mix to trade for Watson as well. Denver will need to give up the farm to land him.
The other potential complicating factor here is the same one that exists with the Jets. Houston plays in the same conference as Denver. While the Broncos may want a quarterback like Darnold and Watson over Lock, keep in mind the Jets and the Texans may not want to see their former starting quarterbacks crush it in the AFC. Houston would prefer to trade Watson to an NFC team.
