The Colts need to spend wisely in free agency to help Carson Wentz succeed. That means Indianapolis should avoid overpaying these three stars.Ā
Indianapolisā decision to trade for Carson Wentz is still reverberating around the NFL landscape. The Coltsā front office canāt afford to rest on their laurels. They should already be making plans on how to spend the massive amount of cap space they possess later in the offseason.
For the record, Indianapolis still projects to have over $43 million in space even after absorbing Wentzās contract. The time is now for the Colts to go all-in to become a legitimate Super Bowl contender in 2021.
That doesnāt mean Indianapolis can afford to spend its money haphazardly. Itās still imperative that the franchise continue to build their roster in a fiscally responsible manner. Overspending on a big-name free agent could do a lot of the teamās recent good work.
As such, the Colts need to avoid spending big on these three free agents. Landing any one of them on a market deal would be a disaster for Indianapolis.
3. Bud Dupree
Justin Houston and Denico Autry are both headed for free agency. Itās very possible the Colts will let both of them find other teams. That suggests Indianapolis will need to add at least one starting edge rusher via free agency.
Dupree shouldnāt be the teamās choice. Heās a one-trick pony as a sack artist who doesnāt win those battles at a high enough percentage to overcome his lack of versatility. The Colts need to let someone else overpay for his sack totals in 2021 and beyond. Paying him the kind of money heāll be looking for in free agency would be a foolish choice for a team on the rise.
