Atletico Madrid vs. Chelsea at Arena Nationala on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Here’s all the info you need to watch this Champions League match.
In the marquee matchup in the Champions League on Tuesday, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea face off in the first leg of the round of 16. Due to travel restrictions, the game which is technically an Atletico home game was moved to Arena Nationala in Bucharest, Romania.
Atletico finished second in the group stage to Bayern Munich to advance to the knockout stage for the third straight season. In La Liga, Atletico are first, three points ahead of their city rivals Real Madrid, with one game in hand. Diego Simeone’s club had a nine-game unbeaten run in La Liga snapped over the weekend, with the club suffering a 2-0 loss to Levante. Luis Suarez has been incredible in his debut season in Madrid. Suarez has scored 16 goals in all competitions and will be the focal point on the attack.
Chelsea won their group, picking up 14 of 18 points. However, the Blues have made significant changes since the group stage. After struggling in the Premier League, manager Frank Lampard was replaced with Thomas Tuchel. Chelsea have played much better in their six games under Tuchel, picking up 14 points to move Chelsea into fifth place.
Tuchel has not been afraid to change up his formation and experiment with different players. The Blues will have to breakdown a tough Atletico defense that often frustrates opponents. Tuchel will have to determine what formation and number of strikers he wants to start. Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham, and Olivier Giroud have each scored at least 10 goals in all competitions.
