Texas Tech football: Ex-Oregon QB Tyler Shough transfers to Red Raiders

Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough is joining the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Texas Tech football program got a huge boost on Monday evening, as former Oregon Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough has transferred to the Red Raiders. Shough completed 63.5 percent of his passes last year for 1,559 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, splitting time with Anthony Brown in Eugene.

It was a bit of shock when Shough opted to leave the Oregon football team this offseason. He had been the Ducks’ starting quarterback just last season. Oregon may not have won its division legitimately, but the Ducks did win the Pac-12 title and faced the Iowa State Cyclones in the Fiesta Bowl. Shough announced his intentions of transferring to Texas Tech over Twitter on Monday.

Though Texas Tech was not one of the teams that offered Shough out of high school, he joins Matt Wells’ Red Raiders team with the hopes of transforming the quarterback position. Shough will work under former Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie, who comes back to Lubbock after serving as Gary Patterson’s offensive coordinator at rival TCU. Shough has three years of eligibility.

His arrival helps offset Alan Bowman entering the transfer portal. He will compete with Henry Colombi, Maverick McIvor and true freshman Behren Morton for the starting job. Because Shough quarterbacked a West Coast blue-blood to a Power 5 championship a season ago, he has to be the favorite to win the job out of fall camp. He has made Texas Tech more interesting ahead of 2021.

Shough transferring to Texas Tech is a bit odd, but it gives the Red Raiders some extra attention.
