Arizona Cardinals free agency 2021: Top 5 targets

Kliff Kingsbury’s team continues to make strides but still needs more help.

The second year of the Kliff Kingsbury Era began promising enough. The Arizona Cardinals won six of their first nine games, including a rousing 32-30 victory over the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills in Week 10. But things began to come apart for the club and they stumbled down the stretch, dropping five of their final seven contests.

Still, the team improved to 8-8 and third place in the NFC West after finishing with a 5-10-1 record and in the divisional basement the previous year.

It will be interesting to see if general manager Steve Keim is active in free agency. He has shown that he and the organization are not afraid to make a big-time move and the club has some money to play with (via Spotrac). And if that is indeed the case, here are five performers who could help out a team that continues to make strides.

5. T Trent Williams (San Francisco 49ers)

Arizona’s offensive line made considerable strides from the previous season. Despite a late-season slump by Kliff Kingsbury’s attack, the Cardinals finished seventh in the league in rushing yards per game. And after surrendering 50 sacks in 2019, Arizona allowed just 29 quarterback traps this past season.

But the club still has some work to do and has a pair of potential unrestricted free agents in the right guard J.R. Sweezy and right tackle Kelvin Beachum. Neither missed a game in 2020 and the latter was a 16-game starter. So what if the Cards were able to add veteran left tackle Trent Williams and slide back D.J. Humphries back over to the right side, where he began his career? Food for thought.
