Plenty of cap space to build around Wilson

Wilson is set to count $32 million against the cap in 2021, and if the Jets are able to pull off a blockbuster trade, would still have plenty of spending flexibility to build around him.

Currently, the Jets have approximately $67.9 million in cap space, second only to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and even factoring in Wilson’s cap hit this season would still have $35.9 million to spend, which would be the seventh most in the NFL, with their quarterback situation solved for the forseeable future.

With Wilson behind center, in the nation’s largest media market, suddenly the Jets look much more attractive to free agent receivers such as Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, and Kenny Golladay, should they escape the franchise tag and become unrestricted free agents.

If receiver Denzel Mims, the Jets’ second-round pick in in the 2020 NFL Draft can stay healthy and make strides on his 23-reception and 357-yard rookie campaign with significantly upgraded quarterback play and the Jets add a veteran, this suddenly becomes a formidable vertical passing game.

Likewise, the Jets would be among the favorites to land Patriots offensive guard Joe Thuney or Washington guard Brandon Scherff to inch closer to completing a rebuild of what PFF ranked as the third-worst in the NFL.
