Triller wins purse bid for Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jr.
Streaming service Triller, which aired the exhibition between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., has won the purse bid for Teofimo Lopez’s upcoming mandatory title defense against George Kambosos Jr, offering $6 million to broadcast the fight.
It appears the streaming service is ready to go all-in on boxing, having offered top dollar to broadcast the Lopez fight, nearly triple the $2.3 million offered by Top Rank.
During the past few weeks, rising superstar Lopez was very vocal with his opinion that he deserved more money than Top Rank was offering, as Bob Arum was not willing to budge from the minimum amount of money stipulated in their contract.
Despite many feeling Lopez was asking for too much money to face an unheralded mandatory challenger, it appeared as though he knew what he was doing, having set himself up for a fanatic payday that Top Rank had no intentions of coming close to.
The purse is split 65-35 in favor of Teofimo, who will earn $3.9 million, before promoter fees.
Interestingly enough, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing also placed a bid for the fight, offering $3.5 million, over $1 million more than Top Rank’s offer.
Needless to say, Lopez is ecstatic with the news of this payday, as he tweeted his excitement following the announcement.
Bob Arum and ESPN, on the other hand, can not be too happy watching their undisputed champion and rising star fighting on another network.
While Triller’s offer was hard to match, Top Rank should not have been outbid by Matchroom boxing as well, it is simply not a good look.
Triller will be placing the Lopez vs. Kambosos fight on PPV, and it seems logical that it will be on the same card as YouTube sensation Jake Paul facing off against former UFC fighter Ben Askren, which is set to take place on April 17.
