Bears: Why is Russell Wilson linked to the Windy City?
By John Buhler
One of the teams linked to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is the Chicago Bears.
When Russell Wilson was linked to the Chicago Bears, many people were surprised to see the Seattle Seahawks quarterback had supposed interest in them.
Despite being one of the NFL oldest franchises, the Bears are not what we would call well-run. They are always chasing the ghost that is Sid Luckman at the quarterback position. While Jim McMahon and Jay Cutler had their moments, few teams have a worse history at quarterback than Chicago. However, you have to hear what ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on Get Up about the rumor.
“He’s not thinking in terms of their struggles on offense,” said Fowler. “He’s thinking in terms of turning around a franchise that is historically great but has had struggles on offense for the better part of 20 years. He would love that kind of story.”
Fowler also mentioned that Wilson has interest in a front-office position when he retires, possibly pursuing ownership if the right situation arises.
Does Russell Wilson have what it takes to change the Chicago Bears’ fate?
There are several things working in Wilson’s advantage to potentially pull this off. One, he has made a historically irrelevant franchise relevant up in the Pacific Northwest. Two, he possesses great arm talent that can thrive in harsh climates. He plays in the rain in Seattle and starred during his one year with Wisconsin. And three, he has never had an offensive-minded NFL head coach.
While Bears head coach Matt Nagy is not without his warts, he no longer will be limited by a quarterback like Mitchell Trubisky with Wilson under center. The Bears have historically drafted and played well on defense. It would serve Wilson in the latter part of his career, as he is on wrong side of 30. Though the Bears are a dark horse to land him, stranger things have happened before.
Wilson on the Bears would transform Chicago into a serious Super Bowl contender immediately.
