Georgia football fans will love what said Cole Cubelic about the Dawgs
By John Buhler
Georgia football fans have to be ecstatic over Cole Cubelic’s surprising praise of their team.
Cole Cubelic may be an Auburn alum, but for this upcoming college football season, he is all about them Dawgs.
Cubelic appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show Friday, letting the world know how he feels about Kirby Smart’s 2021 team. Smart has transformed his alma mater’s program into one of the very best in college football. However, few people outside of Athens or the Metro Atlanta Area are this high on the Georgia football team. According to Cubelic, this could be the best team in the country.
“Paul, I might have Georgia as my No. 1 team in college football heading into the season,” said Cubelic. “…not sure there’s going to be a team even able to compete with them in the SEC East.”
Winning the SEC East is not even close to the same thing as winning the SEC
Entering 2021, Georgia projects as a top-five team in the country, along with the usual suspects of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma. You can count on three of those teams to make the College Football Playoff, with Georgia as the fifth-most likely to do so. While the Dawgs should be better than Florida and lightyears better than the rest of the SEC East, Georgia is not Alabama.
Not since Nick Saban’s first year in Tuscaloosa has Georgia defeated the Crimson Tide. Until that happens, it will be awfully hard to see Georgia as the favorite to come out of the SEC. While the Dawgs do play in the easier of the two SEC divisions, they still have to beat whatever battle-tested team comes out of the West, whether that is Alabama, Auburn, LSU or even Texas A&M.
Overall, Georgia is in a great spot ahead of Smart’s sixth year in Athens. The Dawgs are one of maybe a dozen or so teams that can realistically make the College Football Playoff. After Alabama, the Dawgs are probably the next most likely team to get in out of the SEC, though Florida, LSU and Texas A&M would like to beg and differ. For now, Georgia feels like a top-five team entering 2021.
If Georgia beats Clemson in Charlotte in Week 1, then we may have to throw the Dawgs a bone.
