Mychal Thompson believes Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are greatest backcourt ever
Admittedly-biased Mychal Thompson called Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson the greatest backcourt in NBA history.
Former Los Angeles Lakers center Mychal Thompson’s greatest accomplishment may have been two NBA titles, but fathering Klay Thompson isn’t far behind.
That’s particularly true if what he says about his son is true.
Klay and Golden State Warriors teammate Stephen Curry are the GOAT backcourt.
“I think they’re just perfect for each other,” Thompson told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Kerith Burke. “They’re the best backcourt to ever play together. Obviously, I’m biased, but I think it’s the greatest backcourt ever.”
Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry have achieved greatness together
Whether or not they truly deserve that title, there’s no denying Thompson and Curry’s accomplishments with the Warriors.
Curry is among the greatest shooters to ever live. He was the NBA scoring champ in 2015-16, the league MVP in 2014-15 and 2015-16, a three-time All-NBA First Team selection and a seven-time All-Star.
Thompson made five consecutive All-Star games from 2015-19 while establishing himself as one of the NBA’s premier shooting guards.
Together, the two won three NBA titles in four years.
Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget just how devastating a combo the two were. They haven’t played together since June 13, 2019. Thompson tore his ACL during the NBA Finals and hasn’t been able to suit up for a game since. The knee injury kept him out for a year. When he was slated to return in late 2020, he suffered an Achilles tendon injury during a pickup game. That will keep him off the court this season as well.
When he finally gets back, the elder Thompson is convinced the two will remind everyone of their magical partnership.
“They’ll come back and take off right where they left off when Klay comes back next year,” Thompson said.
It’s a waiting game until then.
