The Washington Football Team is set to part ways with Alex Smith, and these five teams make sense as landing spots for the veteran signal caller.

The Washington Football Team won the NFC East least season, as Alex Smith made his return from a career (and nearly life) threatening leg injury to go 5-1 as the starter. He wants to keep playing, but his future in Washington has been murky at best.

According to Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones of NFL Media on Monday morning, Washington is expected to part ways with the reigning Comeback Player of the Year soon. It felt inevitable, even before Smith’s pointed comments to GQ, and now it’s all but official.

Smith should be able to find a new team fairly easily. He will not be promised a starting job anywhere at this stage of his career, due as much to age (37 in May) as ongoing concerns about his injury and the calf issue he had in the same leg late last season.

Here are five possible landing spots for Smith as he looks to continue his career.

5. New England Patriots

The Patriots have been turning over all trade stones for a quarterback. That will surely extend to free agency if necessary, with over $62 million in cap space (via Over The Cap) to play with. Drafting a quarterback, especially if there’s one they like when they go on the clock at No. 15, is a definite possibility.

In the scenario the Patriots will draft a rookie, Smith is a perfect fit as an early season bridge and a veteran mentor. A cheap deal to bring Smith to New England is possible.
