By John Buhler
Days after Louis Nix’s untimely death in Jacksonville, new details have emerged surrounding the former Notre Dame football standout’s tragic demise.
The death of former Notre Dame football star Louis Nix has sent shockwaves through the college football world. He was found dead on Saturday at the age of 29 in Jacksonville.
New details have emerged about what could have been the cause of Nix’s untimely death. According to Ben Becker of Action News JAX, Nix’s mother revealed a potential cause of death for her son. She relayed the information to Becker on what the investigators on the case told her.
Nix’s mother also said to Becker her son was acting strange in the days leading up to his death. She said “this is out of the normal for him,” and believed her son might have been in danger. Nix had not been seen since leaving his father’s house in Jacksonville on Tuesday, Feb. 23. A missing persons report was filed the following day on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
“I called (on Monday) to see if he felt up to driving his brother to work. He didn’t feel up to it but he came (anyway), asked me what I was up to and told him (I) appreciate him, told me he loved me. (He) called me back to say his brother made it on time and he was going to take it easy.”

Everything surrounding Nix’s tragic death feels strange. Not even a decade ago was he starring on the college gridiron for Notre Dame. Along with All-American linebacker Manti Te’o, Notre Dame came within one game of winning a national title. Nix returned to South Bend for his senior season in 2013. He spent three years in the NFL with four different teams before falling out of the league.
In the days since his disappearance and untimely death, we are all wondering what else will be revealed in this case. With the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office pulling his Hyundai out of a pond, we all knew something sinister was up. Hopefully, we can get enough answers to understand what led to his tragic demise. More importantly, let’s hope Nix and his family get the privacy and grace they are due.
