Richard Roundtree stars in the critically acclaimed Shaft film in 1971. Roundtree plays John Shaft, who is a private detective that’s brought on board by a Harlem mafioso to help get his daughter back. The film is a big influence amongst various sub-cultures including jazz, hip-hop, and funk.
The film is said to be the originator for the blaxploitation sub-genre in the film industry. Shaft’s apartment in the 1971 classic is located on Jane Street in Greenwich Village. In the movie, his office is located in the heart of Times Square, even though many of the scenes are centered around 125th Street in the heart of Harlem. Caffe Reggio, which has been standing since 1927, makes an appearance on the big screen during the sit-down scene between Shaft the mafia connection.
The cafe shop is located at 119 MacDougal Street, also in Greenwich Village. Shaft sticks true to its roots of New York and it stands to be a big hit amongst pop culture today.
