Was The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles filmed in New York City?

While there have been a couple of sequels and remakes, most recently this year, the 1990’s film is considered to still be one of, if not, the best TMNT movies. Obviously, it’s outdated considering today’s technology but it still shouldn’t be quick to be forgotten what kind of an influence and mega-hit this was when it first released.

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello all take us on an exciting adventure through their crime-fighting and rescue missions. The crew of turtles are based on teenage living, with the exception of crime-fighting. They skateboard, listen to music, read comic books, and best of all love their pepperoni-mushroom-extra cheese pizza specials. That mix of pizza alone has influenced pizza shops from all around.

The lair where The Shredder trains his Foot Clan was shot on an abandoned located on Roosevelt Island, which today is the Four Freedoms Park. There’s a scene in which Raphael is walking in a beige trench coat outside a now-gone Loews theater along Columbus Circle. The theater is no longer there, but the building serves as a parking garage for the Trump International Hotel. Right nearby that location, there was a scene where a helpless older lady gets robbed by a bunch of thugs. That was shot right along the beginning of Central Park on 59th Street.

The New York County Courthouse was also used for a scene in the movie. There are other scenes too that were used for the filming of this movie. One is the scene where Raphael is sitting on his roof overlooking the city. That roof is located on 270 Lafayette Street.
