Was The Warriors filmed in New York City?

(Bottles clinking) “Warriors, come out to play.” Remember that final scene right before things are about to go down? Yeah, so do we. Perhaps you already know where it took place, as the famous Wonder Wheel in Coney Island makes an appearance. This is one of the top movies to ever come out of New York. Everything about the film is NYC—the subway, Central Park, the gangs, the cops, the language, etc. It’s arguable that this movie was a bit ahead of its time in the sense that there wasn’t anything like this movie out then.

The Warriors were a gang based out of Coney Island, Brooklyn. The majority of the storyline takes you on a ride through the tough and gritty streets of late ‘70s New York. While it’s a fictional story, a lot of what is told and happening throughout the movie are things that were going on at that time. The graffiti, the crime, the hunger for respect, these are all traits that still carry to this day in parts of the world. Whether this film had an influence on the generations to follow, remains to be said, but there’s no denying the fact that this film stands alone when it comes to the replication of a timeline that very much existed all throughout the five boroughs.
