Was Do the Right Thing filmed in New York City?

Rest in paradise Bill Nunn a.k.a. Radio Raheem. This Spike Lee Joint takes place in Bed Stuy (Bedford-Stuyvesant), Brooklyn between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street. A lot of the movie was filmed along with this particular location but added a couple of built-from-scratch buildings specifically for the movie.

The infamous Sal’s Famous Pizzeria actually didn’t exist prior to the filming. The pizzeria shop was built from scratch on an empty lot on the corner of Lexington and Stuyvesant Avenue. The same goes for the Korean grocery, which was built on the opposite street across the pizzeria on a vacant lot.

The film touches on various social issues, including racial differences. While it may have been solely based in a community in Brooklyn, the issues confronted were things actually happening during those times. It’s a very diverse, entertaining, and life-teaching story that every Spike Lee, hip hop, and pop culture fan should get to see.
