Seahawks add familiar face to coaching staff

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive back DeShawn Snead will return to the team this season as an assistant coach. 

There will be a familiar face back at training camp for the Seattle Seahawks in Renton later this year that fans will surely be fired up about. We’re talking about former defensive back DeShawn Shead, who spent the first six years of his career with the Hawks and helped the team win the Super Bowl back in February of 2014.

While he won’t be suiting up as a player, Shead is getting ready to start the next chapter in his life and is joining the Seahawks as a defensive assistant/defensive backs coach.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has always had close relationships with his former players, so it should be no surprise at all that he’s welcoming Shead back to the Pacific Northwest with open arms.

Shead suited up for Carroll in Seattle from 2012-2017. He then joined the Detroit Lions for one season in 2018. While with the Seahawks, the versatile defenseman appeared in 54 games, making 22 starts. He posted 153 tackles and two interceptions during that time. While with the Lions, Shead played in 12 games, starting one.

Now that he’s back with the Seahawks to begin his coaching career, Carroll will look to the 31 year old to help improve a struggling secondary. When Shead was still making plays for Seattle, he lined up at both safety spots, as well as cornerback. He also arrived to the team with a chip on his shoulder, signing as an undrafted free agent in 2012.

Now, Carroll is once again taking a chance on him, letting Shead fire up his career as an NFL coach  back at the place where it all started.
