3 surprise cuts the Titans could make this offseason

Mike Vrabel’s team has to find a way to fix its shoddy defensive unit.

One year after reaching the AFC Championship Game as a wild card team, the Tennessee Titans won their first division title since 2008. But this time around, Mike Vrabel’s team with one-and-done in the postseason as they were stifled by the visiting Baltimore Ravens, 20-13, in the first round of the playoffs. The club got a big offensive year thanks to quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who picked up where he left off in 2019, as well as running back Derrick Henry. The latter led the league in rushing yards for the second year in a row with a gaudy 2,027 yards and captured NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Then there’s the Tennessee defense, one of the worst units in the league. The club scored 491 points and gave up 439 points. General manager Jon Robinson has some work to do if this team is to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 1999. There’s a lot going on in the AFC South these days and the Titans (via Spotrac) may have to let go of some notable players in order to make their team better.

3. Rodger Saffold

Tennessee’s offensive front has been pretty sound in recent seasons. And this past year, the club overcame the loss of quality right tackle Jack Conklin to free agency (Browns) and left tackle Taylor Lewan going down in October with a knee injury. The latter is on the mend while the team is apparently the club is looking to move on from 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Wilson (via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network).

Veteran blocker Rodger Saffold left the Rams after nine season and headed for Nashville in 2019. If released, the former tackle/turned guard comes off a strong year but if cut loose, he could actually save the Titans roughly $8 million dollars (via Spotrac). It makes for a tough decision for GM Jon Robinson.
