1. Smith Knows The System

In determining potential landing spots for Smith, some people overlooked the Bears. But head coach Matt Nagy was the Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks and then offensive coordinator from 2013-2017, overlapping perfectly with Smith’s run as the starter there.

When Nagy was hired by the Bears in 2018, Smith spoke of the relationship they have.

“He and I spent five years together and we were about as close as it gets from a coach-and-player relationship,” Smith said of Nagy. “To see him grow as a quarterbacks coach, then go to coordinator and now I am pumped for him as he becomes a head coach. I think he is going to do awesome.”

Here’s what Nagy said this week about what he’s looking for in a starting quarterback for 2021.

“I’d say leadership, decision-making and if you have some versatility as a quarterback with your legs, great,” Nagy said. “If you don’t, no problem. We can work around it.”

Smith isn’t going to be much of runner anymore. But Nagy praised his leadership qualities when mentioning the quarterback he worked with in Kansas City.

There’s not a quarterback out there who will know Nagy’s system better than Smith. His physical limits aside, Nagy’s playbook has been naturally narrowed by what Trubisky and Foles can’t do in one respect or another. Having Smith aboard may unlock things, while also having him as someone who can teach the nuances of the offense to others.
