Steelers rumors, Mike Tomlin

Ben Roethlisberger’s tenure with the Steelers is nearing an end. Will Pittsburgh look to replace him in Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft?

In a perfect world, the Steelers would possess the sort of premium draft pick required to secure Ben Roethlisberger’s long-term replacement in this year’s draft. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, the No. 24 overall selection isn’t good enough to make that a good bet for the franchise.

It’s still possible the Steelers will use that selection on a new quarterback, but it’s not overly likely. Instead, fans in the Steel City should focus on the idea that their front office will look to fill another roster need with their first round pick.

Securing another weapon on the outside that can help boost the team’s passing attack would be a prudent play. Upgrading the offensive line also is a big need for the Steelers heading into the offseason.

In the end, Pittsburgh can go in a lot of different directions on Day One, but Steelers fans should pay close attention to the following five prospects.

5. Mac Jones

There’s a strong chance Jones goes off the board much earlier than No. 24, but he’ll be an intriguing option for the Steelers if he lasts this long. His accuracy as a pocket passer gives him a chance to be a solid starter relatively early on in his professional career.

Ultimately, the Steelers should resist the temptation in favor of going for a signal-caller with a higher ceiling. Jones doesn’t have star potential at the game’s most important position. He might be better than Roethlisberger in 2021, but he doesn’t have the juice to push Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl without an exceptional supporting cast around him.
