Saints: New Orleans clawing their way out of cap hell with savvy moves

The New Orleans Saints have restructured two contracts to help get them out of salary cap hell.
By getting linebacker Demario Davis and defensive end Cameron Jordan to agree to contract restructurings, the New Orleans Saints have saved nearly $13.5 million up against the 2021 NFL salary cap.
While that seems like a lot of money, the Saints are still in the worst cap situation in the league, at an estimated $44 million over the projected cap for 2021. The good news for the Saints is one quarter of the league is over the projected cap. The bad news is they still have a ways to go to finally be in the black before the next league year commences at the start of NFL free agency.

Salary cap issues are not the only obstacles the Saints must overcome in 2021
Though general manager Mickey Loomis can do whatever it takes to get the Saints’ salary cap situation in check, New Orleans has a few other obstacles the franchise must overcome before the start of the 2021 NFL season. Those include competing in the same NFC South as Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as who starts at quarterback.

While everybody anticipates Drew Brees will retire this offseason, he has had well over a month to publicly retire and has yet to do so. Whether he is the Saints starter once again for a 16th season or somebody else takes the reins, it feels like New Orleans has missed out on its realistic Super Bowl window for the time being. However, no league in sports sells hope better than the NFL.
Getting Davis and Jordan to agree to restructurings will help the Saints stay competitive in 2021.
