Of course the umpires got both calls wrong on a double play in a spring training game between the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets.

If case you wanted to have your evening ruined, you need to check out how bad the umpires were in the Miami Marlins at the New York Mets spring training game from Sunday afternoon.

In a game that did not count in front of a less-than-capacity crowd, we are once again reminded of why MLB umpires need to be held accountable with video replay. Because this game between NL East rivals was meaningless, one that was further illustrated by a 4-4 “everybody wins!” tie, there was no need to take a look at this terribly blown double-play call under the hood.

Just … wow.

The umpires clearly love the New York Mets and totally hate the Miami Marlins

Not only did the Mets infielder tag the Marlins baserunner on his way to second with the glove instead of the ball, but the Marlins hitter flying out of the batter’s box beat the throw to first. So instead of a traditional double play, the Marlins should have had runners on first and second base. I get umpires being rusty and all, but this was a corroded mess of an utter officiating catastrophe.

When you put your head on the pillow at night, the idea is to feel like you gave your all that day and did the best you could. Then, there are those people who mail it in every day because accountability and integrity are just terms you learned about in grade school and nothing more. If MLB wants to recoup some more lost money, it should have spring training replay sponsored by LensCrafters.

If Trevor Bauer can throw strikes with one eye, then you should be able to use both to call a game.
