5 players Ravens should draft in the first round
2. Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina
Yes, the defensive back situation is not a dire need for the Ravens heading into 2021. In fact, it’s a strength. Although, all that muscle is somewhat top-heavy, and adding another cornerback does have an upside.
Jimmy Smith is not the same player he used to be. He is entering the final year of his current contract and the veteran has not been able to consistently stay on the field. Tavon Young is a nice depth player to have, but drafting a player like Jaycee Horn to fill that third corner role behind Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey may be wise.
Also, Peters’ contract has a potential out after the 2021 season. Therefore, Horn could be an immediate, in-house replacement if the team moves on from Peters after next season.
Horn needs some development time as well, which makes the Ravens a great landing spot. He will not be asked to start right away with those two stars in front of him.
In the NFL, Horn seems to project as an outside corner. In college, he had two interceptions and three sacks with 101 tackles in three seasons. He needs to continue to develop as a ballhawk, and he could use his body frame to play a bit more physically in the NFL too.
With his size (6-foot 1, 205 pounds), Horn could mirror Humphrey as a physical outside corner. His cover skills may not be to the level of the All-Pro, but Horn could fit right in with the style of play those defensive backs for the Ravens use.
