NCAA basketball: Predicting who wins every major conference tournament

Championship Week is here in NCAA basketball and these teams are poised to cut down the nets at the biggest conference tournaments across the country.

Championship Week has arrived and automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament are up for grabs across the country with conference tournaments taking center stage. Spots at the top of the field and precious bubble spots will be determined by the action, especially in the power conference tournaments along with high-caliber mid-major leagues like the Mountain West and West Coast Conference.

Let’s take a look at projecting how these nine tournaments will play out, projecting a winner and highlighting potentially key matchups along the way. First up is the American Athletic Conference, a league that could be very important to teams on the bubble.

AAC Conference Tournament

  • Dates: March 11-14
  • Location: Fort Worth, TX
  • Venue: Dickies Arena
  • Top Seed: Wichita State
  • Bracket

Wichita State may be the top seed in the AAC but the league’s only guaranteed tournament team is Houston, which is projected to end up as a two-seed if the season was to end today. The Cougars wrapped the regular season with a buzzer-beating win over Memphis that did serious damage to the Tigers’ bubble hopes.

Houston is fittingly the two-seed in the AAC tournament and could get a rematch with Memphis in the semifinals. The AAC’s other bubble teams are on the other side of the bracket with Wichita State and four-seed SMU trying to improve their cases with strong showings in Fort Worth.

The AAC will likely be a one-bid league if the Cougars win the tournament, making this an event bubblers watch with great interest. Houston is vulnerable but they should still find a way to get the job done on Selection Sunday.
