North Carolina basketball can take one step closer to locking up an at-large berth by beating Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament.
It hasn’t been a great year for the blue bloods of college basketball but North Carolina hasn’t had it nearly as bad as some of the traditional powerhouse programs. The Tar Heels look like one of the ACC’s best bets to get into the NCAA Tournament and enter the ACC Tournament with very little work to do to secure an at-large berth.
A win over Florida State at the end of February added a much-needed quality victory to North Carolina’s resume and completing a season sweep of Duke put the Tar Heels right on the brink of locking up their ticket to the dance. The only potential obstacle left would be adding a bad loss in the ACC Tournament, one that Roy Williams’ team will look to avoid tonight against Notre Dame.
The Fighting Irish are in a situation where they have to win the ACC Tournament and secure the automatic bid to go dancing, meaning they are essentially playing with house money down the stretch. There is some positive momentum building for Mike Brey’s team after a strong win against the Seminoles to end the regular season before they won in dramatic fashion against Wake Forest last night.
Trey Wertz nailed a deep three at the buzzer to stun the Demon Deacons and earn this date with the Tar Heels. Notre Dame gave North Carolina everything they could handle back in January, losing by a point in Chapel Hill, making this rematch a dangerous one for the Tar Heels.
