Bills releasing John Brown after two years with Buffalo
After two years with the Buffalo Bills, the team is releasing the veteran wide reciever a few days before the start of NFL free agency.
John Brown is looking for another home.
The 30-year-old deep threat announced on his Instagram that his time with the Buffalo Bill is coming to an end. This isn’t surprising considering the Bills — like many teams with the salary cap crashing to $182.5 million — need to free up cap space.
By releasing Brown, the Bills are saving almost $8 million against the cap in 2021.
The Buffalo Bills are releasing John Brown on Wednesday
A seven-year NFL receiver, Brown has played with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and Bills. He enjoyed the most success in 2019 with Buffalo, catching 72 passes on 115 targets for 1,060 yards and six touchdowns. The vet also posted one other 1,000-yard campaign, notching it in his second season back in ’15 with the Cardinals.
Now, Brown joins a very crowded receiver class in free agency headlined by Kenny Golladay. However, there are a litany of other big names including JuJu Smith-Schuster, Corey Davis, Sammy Watkins, Will Fuller, Curtis Samuel, Larry Fitzgerald, T.Y. Hilton, Emmanuel Sanders, A.J. Green, Marvin Jones, Demarcus Robinson, Nelson Agholor and many others.
At this stage of his career, it seems Brown would be a nice fit on a contender who employs a quarterback willing and able to utilize his elite speed. The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers immediately come to mind, while the Los Angeles Rams are another squad worth watching. That said, all three are currently fighting salary cap problems.
