5. Josh McCown, former Sam Houston State quarterback

Josh McCown fits the mold of the ex-quarterback-turned-head-coach. First of all, McCown is a journeyman quarterback. Many quarterbacks turned head coaches play for multiple teams. That is an asset for anyone desiring to be a head coach.

Players that sit under multiple coaches have the opportunity to get an idea of how they want to lead and how they don’t want to lead. McCown has played for nine different teams. In addition to leadership, players see different offensive philosophies.

McCown has already been identified as a player who has the potential to be a good coach someday. While playing for Cleveland in 2016, former head coach Hugh Jackson offered McCown an opportunity to coach. ” I told him already if he ever wanted to coach, he could coach for me anytime he wants,” Jackson said.

McCown’s last two stoops, Philadelphia and New York, he mentored young quarterbacks, Carson Wentz and Sam Darnold. McCown has had the experience of being the veteran in younger quarterback rooms. That experience could lend itself to a path of becoming a quarterback guru.
