Dak Prescott drew inspiration from Alex Smith in his road to recovery
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott gave credit to Alex Smith as his inspiration this offseason.
The Dallas Cowboys always knew Dak Prescott was going to be their quarterback of the future. If anything, the 2020 season was a wake-up call to Jerry Jones that the fifth-year quarterback was more valuable than imaginable entering a franchise tag season.
It hurt his ‘ wallet, but it might pan out for the future of the Cowboys. Prescott and the Cowboys agreed to a new four-year deal worth up to $164 million. The 27-year-old will be paid $75 million in the first season courtesy of a hefty $66 million signing bonus to remain at “The Star” through 2024.
In 2020, Prescott was off to a career-best, leading the NFL with 1,856 passing yards through five games. Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle fracture-dislocation in Week 5 that cost him the remainder of the season.

As Prescott rehabbed during the offseason, he found inspiration in the form of a divisional rival. Looking back, Prescott thanked Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith for showing him that anyone can come back from an even worse injury.
Smith’s Comeback Story shined in 2020
The Washington Football Team watched Smith wince in pain during the 2018 seasonal matchup against the Houston Texans. The then 34-year-old suffered a compound fracture with further complications that many thought could be more than career-ending.
Smith spent the next two offseasons rehabbing his leg, hoping for a chance to play again. On the same that Prescott left the field, Smith returned to it. He was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year after playing in 10 games last season.
Although Washington released Smith, his comeback served as inspiration for Prescott and countless others in the NFL and outside.
How funny is it that Prescott returning to the field was partially attributed to a player on the hated rivals?
Prescott will have a chance to lead Dallas back to a Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl 30. With most of the offense paid, they’ll need to be the driving force to contend in the NFC.
The Cowboys have their franchise quarterback and he’s keen on contending once more. The team should be thanking Smith for that as well.
