Chiefs: Mitchell Schwartz thanks team with emotional social media post

Veteran right tackle Mitchell Schwartz took to Twitter on Thursday to send an emotional goodbye after the Kansas City Chiefs released him. 

Some big news dropped out of Kansas City this morning, with the Chiefs announcing they’ve released offensive linemen Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher. As you might imagine, this is a tough time for the two, as they helped the team win a Super Bowl in 2019 and nearly repeated this past campaign.

For Schwartz, he’s no question going to miss the interaction with the fans every Sunday. He made that much clear in a passionate goodbye tweet he posted.

As you can see from the tweet above, Schwartz sure is going to miss not only calling Kansas City home, but also being able to don a Chiefs jersey each week. He spent the past five years with the organization, appearing in 134 games, starting every single one.

Schwartz missed the majority of the 2020 campaign with a back injury, forcing him to miss the postseason and the Super Bowl defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder underwent back surgery last month and hopes to be all fit for the new campaign.

Now, he’ll hit free agency and figures to garner plenty of attention from teams out there in need of a starting tackle. For Kansas City, they’ll need to find replacements for Schwartz at right tackle, Fisher at left tackle and center Austin Reiter, who is also expected to land elsewhere next season.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes will always be a top priority, so it will be a busy offseason for Kansas City in putting together a formidable unit to get the job done.
