Details emerge on Derion Kendrick’s arrest for gun charges
By John Buhler
Former Clemson football standout Derion Kendrick was arrested on Friday morning for drug and gun charges.
Derion Kendrick’s 2021 is getting worse by the day, as the former Clemson football star was arrested on Friday morning in his native Rock Hill, South Carolina. Kendrick was found by Rock Hill patrol officers around 3:00 a.m. ET on Friday morning asleep in his girlfriend’s car with a gun resting in his lap. He was also cited for simple possession of marijuana prior to being arrested.
Kendrick was dismissed from the Clemson football program by head coach Dabo Swinney shortly before spring practice. Swinney apparently had enough of the off-field issues with Kendrick, leading to his dismissal. He may have wished him the best, but this arrest may cost the senior cornerback an opportunity to transfer to other Power 5 blue-bloods like Alabama or Georgia.
Bad choices have led to one hell of an offseason for Derion Kendrick
Kendrick was draft-eligible this offseason. He could have left the Clemson program to be a day-two or day-three pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. Instead, he decided to return to Clemson ahead of his senior year to improve his draft stock. Unfortunately, he has done nothing but tarnish it since the Tigers fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl. Let’s hope he gets some help.
Coming out of high school, Kendrick was a five-star wide receiver prospect. He successfully converted to cornerback ahead of his sophomore year at Clemson. While he could end up playing for another championship-contending team this fall, these ongoing legal issues do present a problem for teams like Alabama, Georgia or anybody of that ilk to welcome him into their program.
Hopefully this arrest serves as a wakeup call for Kendrick so that he can save his football career.
