Rough news is in for the Washington Nationals, as star pitcher Stephen Strasburg is already dealing with a calf injury in spring training.

With the Washington Nationals hoping to make some serious noise in the NL East this season, there’s no question they’ll need their starting pitcher to remain healthy to down the Braves, Mets and others. Well, so far down in spring training, there’s already some concern for Stephen Strasburg.

The hard-throwing righty has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career, and now it looks like he’s got a calf injury to deal with at spring training. In a showdown with the Houston Astros, Strasburg appeared to tweak his calf after a pitch and was in some serious discomfort.

As you can see from the video above, the veteran starting hurler stepped off the bump and immediately knew something was wrong. With Opening Day right around the corner, Washington is going to want to be careful with Strasburg and likely keep him off the hill for at least the next few days.

The last thing the team wants is to bring him back too soon and have him potentially re-injure himself or make things worse leading up to the 2021 campaign. Last season, Strasburg had a 2020 to forget, with him only able to make two starts before being shutdown in late August for the remainder of the season.

Strasburg was diagnosed with carpal tunnel neuritis and had to undergo wrist surgery because of it. This came the year after Washington won the World Series and Strasburg was named the World Series MVP. For now, fans will have to hope Strasburg’s calf injury isn’t a serious one and he won’t be forced to miss extended time.
