Saints contract extension with Taysom Hill is absolutely ludicrous

New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill had his contract restructured to save salary cap room. He is getting a four-year extension worth a whopping $140 million. All four of the years are voidable, though.
For the New Orleans Saints to save salary cap room ahead of 2021 NFL free agency, they went to the extreme by restructuring quarterback Taysom Hill’s contract.
Hill is now getting a four-year extension worth $140 million. Though all four years of the deal are voidable, Hill has never been a full-time starter at quarterback since his college days at BYU. This news comes out the same day former Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement. At least the Saints will be saving over $7.5 million over the salary cap for the 2021 NFL season.
The Saints will do anything to free up cap space, including extending Taysom Hill
Admittedly, this contract is not as absolutely ridiculous as it seems upon first glance. When you see Hill making $140 million over the life of a four-year contract, you start to question everything in the universe. But once you realize that all four years of this deal are voidable, you can learn to live with that large number for a 30-something backup quarterback who has never led an NFL team before.
With Brees formally announcing his retirement, Hill is slated to be the quarterbacking heir apparent in the Big Easy. Of course, the Saints also employ former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston on their roster. While he hits free agency this week, New Orleans is expected to bring Winston back on a second contract, like what the New England Patriots did with Cam Newton.
It will take some getting used to with Hill being a $140 million quarterback, but here we are.
