Urban Meyer is bringing his former Ohio State football star running back Carlos Hyde with him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hyde signed a two-year deal for $6 million.

Carlos Hyde is looking to give it the old college try, as the former Ohio State football star has agreed to a two-year deal to play for his college coach Urban Meyer’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hyde will make $6 million over that two-year contract he will reportedly sign in 2021 NFL free agency.

Prior to being a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Hyde had been a two-time All-Big Ten performer at the running back position for Meyer. After spending his first four years in the NFL with the 49ers, he has bounced around the league the last three years. He was most recently with the 2020 Seattle Seahawks. How much does he have left in the tank?

Carlos Hyde was a 1,000-yard rusher two seasons ago with the 2019 Texans

Though Hyde is coming off statistically his worst year of his career since his rookie season with the 49ers, he did rush for over 1,000 yards for the first time in his career as a member of the 2019 Houston Texans. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, he can be a solid change-of-pace back in Jacksonville, backing up emerging star tailback James Robinson, who flourished in his rookie year.

Is Hyde going to be the same running back for Meyer he was in college? Of course not. However, he may be a strong veteran leader for this rebuilding team. Keep in mind that Hyde was there for the earliest days of Meyer in Columbus. The Buckeyes have been the preeminent program in the Big Ten since Meyer’s arrival in 2012. Maybe Hyde helps turn around the culture in Jacksonville?
