NFL news: Patriots stealing Nelson Agholor from Raiders
On what continues to be an incredible day for the New England Patriots, they’ve stolen veteran receiver Nelson Agholor from the Las Vegas Raiders.
The New England Patriots are going for the gusto this offseason. After a disappointing 7-9 finish last season, Bill Belichick and company are looking to right their wrongs and head into next season with a much stronger roster.
In addition to bringing back veteran quarterback Cam Newton for one year, the Pats have already secured linebacker Matt Judon, tight end Jonnu Smith, defensive back Jalen Mills, offensive lineman Trent Brown and others.
Now with the official free agency start date just two days away, New England has agreed to terms with former Las Vegas Raiders receiver Nelson Agholor, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Patriots agree to a two-year deal with veteran receiver Nelson Agholor
Algoholor’s exit from Las Vegas seemed almost a foregone conclusion after the way their season ended. They finished with an 8-8 record to show for their first season in their shiny new stadium. But tension started to boil over before their final game of the season as Agholor verbally went after his own teammates after their Week 16 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
The six-year NFL veteran certainly knows what it means to be a winner, having secured a Super Bowl championship with the Philadelphia Eagles just a few years ago. In his time with the Raiders, he snagged 48 receptions for a career-high 896 yards and eight touchdowns and was one of their top-performing receivers last year.
Agholor will join Newton on the Patriots on a two-year, $24 million deal according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
This is certainly a huge deal for Agholor at this point in his career. It also shows that New England is serious about surrounding Newton with veteran talent to help combat any regression he may be personally facing.
It’s too soon to tell how competitive Belichick’s team will be this season but they’ve taken a giant leap forward today.
