Rams re-signing Leonard Floyd despite tight cap situation
The Rams are bringing Leonard Floyd back on a lucrative four-year deal at a time when the team is also trying to cut a ton of money to get under the salary cap.
The Los Angeles Rams don’t care about any perceived salary cap problems. They are spending some serious cash this week.
The “legal tampering” period of NFL free agency is open and the Rams decided to make a splash by getting Leonard Floyd back on a brand new deal. ESPN’s Josina Anderson tweeted out the news first and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport quoted her tweet with further information.
Rams bring back Leonard Floyd on a four-year deal
Adam Schefter followed up the initial announcement from his ESPN colleague with the official length of the deal.
Floyd is a former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears who went out to Los Angeles last season. He had 10.5 sacks in 16 games and also posted a new career-high in tackles with 55. The linebacker had a resurgent season in 2020 and it was clear the Rams wanted to lock him in for the long haul.
But what about the cap situation? The Rams only have a few days to get under the lowered cap number and were still $23 million over late last week.
Restructuring the top contracts on the team is the most likely move and it would be absolute madness for GM Les Snead to sign Floyd without such a plan in place. Fans are, as always, left in the dark, and confusion can begin to set in until the moves are eventually made.
