Lance Briggs’ reaction to Bears signing Andy Dalton says it all

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs reacted with an emoji after the team signed Andy Dalton.

Lance Briggs was not shy about showing how he feels about the new quarterback the Chicago Bears acquired.

The Bears inked a one-year, $10 million deal with veteran quarterback Andy Dalton on Tuesday. Briggs, a member of the 2006 Bears squad that appeared in Super Bowl XLI, showed that he was not impressed with the signing, simply posting the “face palm” emoji with a character’s hand covering their face.

With speculation growing for weeks that a trade could be made to acquire the Super Bowl XLVIII champion and eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, the Bears ended up getting the Red Rifle. Briggs, along with other fans of Da Bears, appeared to be let down that this franchise once again finds itself missing out on top-tier talent at the quarterback position.

With Deshaun Watson on the trade market, Dalton’s signing makes any possibility of the Bears acquiring Watson (if there was any) appear to be bleak, which adds another chapter to this franchise’s quarterback saga.

In recent memory, the Bears traded up to acquire Mitchell Trubisky in the 2017 NFL Draft leaving both Patrick Mahomes (the 2018 NFL MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP) and Watson (three-time Pro Bowl selection) on the draft board.

Even with the 2021 quarterback sweepstakes, the Bears end up getting an (at-best) middle-of-the-road quarterback in Dalton. If there’s anyone who can sympathize with how this team must be feeling about their quarterback situation, it’s Briggs, the longtime Bears linebacker who played on an NFC Championship-winning team and won games despite the inconsistent play of their quarterback Rex Grossman, whose play cost them a chance to win Super Bowl XLI and held Chicago back from making another Super Bowl appearance the following seasons.

Before Briggs decided to hang it up, their best options at quarterback were Jay Cutler and a 2013 Josh McCown, so he can relate to what Bears fans are feeling now as much as anyone.
