3 players Steelers can sign to replace Bud Dupree
1. Jadevon Clowney
Clowney didn’t notch a single sack for the Titans in eight games last season, but he’s still got enough gas left in the tank to help Pittsburgh. The Steelers could land him on a bargain contract if they focus more on what he’s capable of rather than his struggles to generate sacks at the pro level.
For the purposes of comparison, his PFF grade of 74.9 last season is significantly higher than Dupree’s. Clowney still does a good job generating pressure even if he can’t finish the deal with a sack.
It’s also worth pointing out that he’s never played on a defense with the type of surrounding pass-rush talent that’s already present in Pittsburgh. The idea of him crashing down off the edge unblocked is enough to cause nightmares for opposing offensive coordinators. Clowney also possesses a massive advantage any time he’s allowed to rush the passer while being single blocked.
No one can be sure what Clowney’s desired price tag is at the moment, but the Steelers are one franchise that should make a concerted effort to land him well in advance of the regular season. He’s a free agent who can take this defense from good to great in 2021.
