Bears got Andy Dalton to sign by guaranteeing the starting QB job

There is no quarterback competition with the Chicago Bears where the job is Andy Dalton’s after signing a one-year contract as a free agent.

Andy Dalton will be the Week 1 starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

Dalton revealed one of the reasons for him signing with the Bears was they promised him the starting quarterback job.

Nick Foles will either serve as the backup or could be released or traded for a late draft pick if some team is desperate enough.

Dalton signed a one-year deal on Tuesday to the disdain of Bears fans and former Bears players. It ended the dream (fantasy) that Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson would be acquired in a blockbuster trade to give the organization the best quarterback in franchise history.

The former Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys quarterback is not that, but he will be the starting quarterback barring injury.

Dalton is coming off a season with the Cowboys where he signed to be Dak Prescott’s backup but was pressed into starting duty after Prescott’s season-ending ankle injury.

The former second-round pick out of TCU went 4-5 as a starter, throwing for 2,170 yards and 14 touchdowns to eight interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes.

He orchestrated three game-winning drives and a pair of fourth-quarter comebacks.

Those numbers are rather ordinary but he did so with a far more talented supporting cast in Dallas than he’ll have in Chicago.

While the Mitchell Trubisky era is over in Chicago, the Dalton era could be short-lived. Dalton should just be a bridge quarterback for this season to whoever the team drafts in April’s NFL Draft or who the team drafts in 2022.
