Roy Williams was emotional after the North Carolina Tar Heels lost to Wisconsin in the Round of 64.

It is not often we see the North Carolina Tar Heels not make it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament. But in 2021, anything is possible, especially after this past year. The No. 8 Tar Heels were handedly defeated by the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers 85-62 to send them out of the Indiana bubble early.

With this loss, legendary North Carolina head coach Roy Williams’ record in the Round of 64 was brought to 29-1. Following the game, Williams had tears in his eyes while talking about the “foundation” of the team.

North Carolina leaves NCAA Tournament early following loss to Wisconsin

It was certainly an unusual loss for Williams and the Tar Heels. They actually trailed the Badgers 40-21 at halftime, with many feeling like the game was already over. When you look at the performance, their shooting woes showed up at the worst possible time. In the entire contest, the Tar Heels shot 38.5-percent from the field, while the Badgers shot 50.8-percent.

On North Carolina’s entire roster, there were only three players to score double digit points for North Carolina. Those athletes were sophomore forward Armando Bacot (15), senior forward Garrison Brooks (10) and freshman guard Caleb Love (10).

The Tar Heels will look to come back next year. They realize what a first round loss feels like now, and you better believe Williams will do whatever it takes to ensure they never experience this pain again.
