March Madness: Georgetown losing to Colorado ruined everyone’s upset special
By John Buhler
Leave it up to Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown basketball team to bust your March Madness bracket.
Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown basketball team had no chance against the sharpshooting Colorado basketball program as the Hoyas fell in the Round of 64, ruining many brackets in the process.
The Big East Champion Hoyas fell to the Buffaloes 96-73 on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse after a Cinderella run to win the Big East Tournament. Colorado shot a blistering 16-of-25 from 3-point range, sending Georgetown back to the nation’s capital with a crushing first-round loss. Because the Hoyas were a No. 12 seed in their region, their loss did major damage to many people’s brackets. They picked the wrong No. 12 seed.
According to ESPN, those who filled out a March Madness bracket on their site, Georgetown upsetting Colorado was the most popular upset pick.
43 percent of brackets had No. 12 Georgetown upsetting No. 5 Colorado
There are a handful of old adages to live by when filling out a March Madness bracket. The three that are the gold standard historically are no No. 16 seeds beat a No. 1 seed (thanks a lot, 2018 Virginia), do not pick all four No. 1 seeds to advance to the Final Four and you better pick a No. 12 seed to upset a No. 5 seed in the Round of 64.
Unfortunately, many bought into the Hoyas’ hype.
This tends to happen when a decent program of note gets into the big dance by winning its conference tournament championship. With a high-profile head coach in Ewing and the Big East being a Power 6 conference, we all wanted to believe the Hoyas would go on a deep run like they did when Ewing starred for them. Too bad Colorado had been one of the Pac-12’s finest all year.
Hopefully, you did not pick Georgetown to make it to the Sweet 16 or the Elite Eight this March.
