Alabama football: Nick Saban lashed out at reporters for innocent question (Video)
By John Buhler
Alabama football head coach Nick Saban is in midseason form at the podium, as he has already gotten snippy with the beat reporters who are covering Crimson Tide spring practice.
Every so often, Alabama football head coach Nick Saban will let it rip during a press conference. We are in the infancy of 2021 spring practice and Saban is in midseason form at the podium.
Saban was asked about what role linebacker Christian Harris will play on his defense. Harris was seen playing several linebacker positions during the early stages of spring practice. While Saban offered a response, it in no way, shape or manner answered the question. He wasn’t being rude, but he did not want to divulge what Alabama’s plans are towards revamping its defense for 2021.
“We do things differently in the spring, I know you guys want answers to all the questions,” said Saban. “We play right and left safety. We play right and left outside backer. We play left and right inside backer, so they got to be mike, they’ve got to be will … we’re trying to create diversity in players, not trying to give you an answer so you can write about who the starter is everywhere, aight?”
“And then we’ll figure out at the end of the spring and next fall when we go into fall camp, ‘okay, this is the best way for us to play.’ But if we don’t experiment and move all these guys around, but then the other good thing about that is next year, we can get the best guy in the game because he can play mike or well. It’s a really good question, but it’s not one that’s going to have an answer for a long time.”
Nick Saban brings up several great points in creative defensive diversity
For as much as the Alabama fan base would love to see an accurate depth chart heading into and through spring practice, Saban has a point in cross-training his defensive players. By giving guys plenty of looks at multiple positions, he and his staff can best figure out what each defensive package can look like. It also offers experience for a guy to slot into a new role during the season.
Overall, you cannot blame Saban for addressing this question in the manner he did. However, what is a bit shocking is the Crimson Tide are the defending national champions. They won the 2021 College Football Playoff only 66 days before another one of his videos at the podium went viral. Thankfully, we are good for about two or three moments of these every single year from him.
If you thought Saban would answer any depth chart questions before Easter, you were wrong.
