Chiefs bringing back veteran safety on one-year deal
By Mark Powell
The Chiefs are reportedly re-signing 31-year-old safety Daniel Sorensen.
Sorensen has spent all seven of his NFL seasons in Kansas City, after he was signed by the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent upon going unselected out of BYU in the 2014 NFL Draft.
He plays both the safety and cornerback position, making him extremely valuable to the Chiefs defense, especially when the team is dealing with injuries. Sorensen gives Steve Spagnuolo another weapon to use in his various defensive sets.
Not only that, but Sorensen is a special teams captain, and can impact the game in multiple phases. Despite his tendency to almost always go for the big play on defense — often leaving Kansas City’s secondary susceptible to big plays — the Chiefs have the leaders and system in place to overcome that deficiency.
Daniel Sorensen’s highlight of the season came in the playoffs
Sorensen destroyed Rashard Higgins as the Browns receiver reached for the goal line, causing a fumble in the process. That thunderous hit sums up Sorensen’s play-style in a nutshell. He takes chances, and often delivers a big play when his team needs it most.
The numbers on Sorensen’s 2021 contract have yet to come out, but he made just under $4 million in 2020. It’s tough to see him surpassing that number.
