Gonzaga looks like invincible Goliath in romp of Oklahoma – Can anyone beat the Bulldogs in the NCAA Tournament?
After making quick work of Oklahoma, Gonzaga looks to continue their quest to be one of the game’s elite.
Another day, another victory for the Gonzaga Goliaths- er Bulldogs. It almost feels that way after they took care of business against the Oklahoma Sooners. After sending the Sooners home, the Bulldogs are headed back to the Sweet 16, with their perfect record still intact.
Drew Timme scored a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Gonzaga to an 87-71 win over the 8-seed Sooners. Jalen Suggs had 15 points while Corey Kispert added 14. Austin Reaves led Oklahoma with 27 points.
There’s more to this run than the national championship and righting the wrongs of their fall against North Carolina. In fact, there’s history on the line. Should the Bulldogs be the team to cut down the nets this NCAA Tournament, they would become the first team since the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers to go undefeated through an entire basketball season.
There’s no question that head coach Mark Few has history on the mind and so do the players. But at this point, they are keeping their focus on the next game and leaving speculation of perfection to those outside the team.
Can anyone stop Gonzaga basketball from winning the NCAA Tournament?
Do we have any reason to believe that guys like Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs are really interested in heading home before the NCAA Tournament is over? Absolutely not. Plus, Gonzaga is looking to make a statement and do what several have tried to do since the Hoosiers did it, only to come up short in the end.
Remember when Frank Kaminsky ended the Harrison twins and the Kentucky dream after 38-0? Or how the Wildcats previously knocked out Wichita State in 2014? It’s a hard task to do, but this Gonzaga team just might be the one to do it.
The only team that may stand in their way of making history is fellow 1-seed Baylor who has looked dominant in their first two tournament games. Ranked behind Gonzaga in the AP Top 25 for much of the season, the Bears may be the only ones standing in Gonzaga’s pursuit of perfection.
Gonzaga next plays the winner of Creighton/Ohio in their Sweet 16 showdown.
