LSU basketball: Tigers screwed over by garbage charge call late against Michigan (Video)
By Scott Rogust
The LSU Tigers were called for a controversial charging foul late in the second half against the Michigan Wolverines in the Round of 32.
The 8-seeded LSU Tigers entered the Round of 32 looking to pull off the upset against the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines. Given the ineptitude of the Big Ten teams this NCAA Tournament, we could not rule out an LSU win. The Tigers fought their hardest, but there is one thing that their fanbase could not stomach.
With Michigan holding a 74-68 lead, guard Cameron Thomas successfully made a layup to seemingly pull the Tigers within four points. However, the on-court officials deemed that Thomas committed a charge on that play, and the points did not count. Michigan went on to win 86-78 to advance to the Sweet 16.
Tigers: LSU falls to Michigan late in the second half to exit the NCAA Tournament
LSU fans were livid after seeing the potentially three-point play completely nullified, as they believed Michigan should have been called for blocking. As is the case with officiating in sports, you can’t always get what you want.
Thomas was the star of the game for the Tigers, as he scored 30 points while shooting 10-for-23 from the field. Guard Javonte Smart also shined for LSU, as he tallied 27 points (10-for-23 from field, 5-for-5 on free throws), nine rebounds and five assists.
Bad call or not, credit must be given to the Tigers. They took the best team in the region to the limit and fell just short in the closing minutes of regulation.
